Dr. Ronald Garcia
Über
Dr. Garcia studierte Mikrobiologie in Bachelor und Master an der Santo Tomas Universität in Manila. Nachdem er einige Jahre in Industrie und in lehrender Position an der Universität auf den Philippinen gearbeitet hatte, schloss er sich 2006 Rolf Müllers Labor für seine Doktorarbeit in der Pharmazeutischen Biotechnologie an der Universität des Saarlandes an. Seit der Gründung des HIPS 2009 arbeitete er dort für das Helmholtz Zentrum für Infektionsforschung. 2011 wurde er promoviert und führt seitdem seine Arbeit an potentiell anti-infektiven mikrobiellen Naturstoffen und der Erforschung von neuen Myxobakterien fort.
Dr. Garcia vereint mit Interesse und Leidenschaft die multidisziplinären Felder der mikrobiellen Vielfalt, Ökologie, Metagenomik, Systematik, Phylogenie und Physiologie, um die Grenzen der Kultivierbarkeit von Myxobakterien zu verschieben. Über die Jahre hat er eine einzigartige Stammsammlung mit außergewöhnlichen und seltenen Myxobakterien aufgebaut. Diese dient der Entdeckung neuer Naturstoffe mit dem Schwerpunkt auf neuen Antibiotika. Zurzeit arbeitet er an einem Forschungsprojekt mit dem Ziel, das Problem der Menschheit-bedrohenden Antibiotika-Resistenzen mithilfe von Myxobakterien aus unerschlossenen Quellen zu bekämpfen.
